Teresa Burrows
Stolen is part of the series blue beaver’s burden and the disappearance of the shaking tent sisters, (funded by the Manitoba Arts Council). Stolen is part of the narrative of missing and murdered women. The series is the artist’s examination of “our” perceptions, and her personal horror of the loss of our sisters, mothers, and daughters to our growing culture of violence. Blue beaver’s burden . . . has continued her alas(s) in rupertsland series, and seeing colonization and the Hudson Bay Company’s historical motto “pro pelle cutem”(we risk our lives for skins) evolve to “we risk our lives with skin”.
Burrows, formerly a cultural programmer, probation officer, addictions counsellor and mother, trained as a professional artist (BFA 1984), but quit her social work career in 1998, to create and exhibit art fulltime. Her contemporary glass beadwork and mixed media art work has been celebrated in 2009, as a RBC glass artist of the
year finalist, and as the 2011 Minister for the Status of Women’s Artists for Social Change recipient for Craft.
She is presently completing her “secrets of the skin room” series(funded by the Canada Council for the Arts).
Another elaborately glass beaded garment will showcase, with works from other series, at the GAAC 30 smashing years glass couture show in 2013.
