Outlaw Neon
The Outlaw Neon was a guerrilla arts group focussed on imposing short term (7-10 hrs) artistic interventions in public and private, urban and natural sites in and around Toronto from 1989 onwards. These works were entirely self funded by the group which was primarily comprised of Orest Tataryn, Alfred Engerer, and Andrey Berezowsky along with a shifting personnel of others.
We were independent self directed and experimental artist crafts persons. We also sought to popularise neon for artistic expression. These installations were non commercial and driven by a collective passionate energy. Sites were chosen for practicality of installation, visual impact and allowance for happenstance of discovery. All installations were comprised of free form hand blown neon tubes, produced at variously available hot glass studios in southern Ontario in combination with final neon work at orest’s neon shop.
Over our first couple of years we elevated the tube and installation quality by hand powdering the tubes with fluorescent powders. Variations in tube diameter and the flowing elegance of the forms can only be achieved by the glass blowing process period.
