Debbie Ebanks Schlums
To be human is to be a blend of cultures, races, ethnicities and gender; categories we use to define what is Us and what is Them. Many are willing to die to defend these social constructs, yet the only thing that separates Us from Them is geography and circumstance. My work attempts to break down this dichotomy. Consider the war child. Having ancestral roots in sub-Saharan Africa, it is disturbing to think of the small degree of separation between my own children who play war and the children made to conduct war. Indeed, That war
child could have been My war child.
After earning an Hons. B.A. In Political Science and Philosophy, Peace and Conflict Studies Option and an M.A. In International Relations, I found that I was best able to express the results of inquiry by employing a visual language. Workshops at Sheridan College have been key to developing this
language.
