David James
“The sensual and dynamic nature of glass intrigues me,” says sculptor David James. “In creating
my cast pieces, the primary focus is on form. Then I integrate light and colour, texture and size to achieve dynamism.
Glass offers a rare visual dimension, the interior. While an object can appear placid on the surface,
inside one can create a veritable ballet of veils as an energetic and fascinating counterpoint. ‘In a work of art, chaos must shimmer through the veil of order’, observed the German poet Novalis. In ‘Tsunami’,traces of bubbles map the flows of the liquid ’metal’. You can feel the primeval power of the waves.”
James, whose studio is in Sutton, in the eastern townships of Québec, also creates monumental outdoor sculptures in granite and stainless steel. His works are in the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery in Waterloo,
Ontario, and Montréal’s Museum of Fine Arts and have been designated as cultural objects of national importance by Heritage Canada. He exhibits in Canada, United States and England.
