Cheryl Wilson Smith
The dance, the reflection and manipulation of light that glass can perform, the transformation, cold, clean and smooth as it cloaks itself in mystery, always seductive, is why I choose to work with glass. I am in love with
the technical processes, especially in casting and frit casting.
I live in what is considered the far north. My work is deeply influenced by what I am surrounded by daily, the boreal forest, flapping wings of a raven as it soars overhead, the rocky shores of the lake, the ripples on the lake radiate as the fish jump and and all the wonders come with small town life in the wilderness. Through my work, I am exploring the concepts of what lies underneath and within everyday objects that surround us.
My latest work is in the layering of frit to create sculptured objects.
These castings have inspired me by the complicated processes of translating my drawings and then slicing and
weaving gossamer fine layers of frit into structural shapes. The individual layers are more delicate than torn paper yet as a whole able to create a sculptural object which manifests curiosity and beauty.
I hope to be able to share my joy and translate my world for participants to connect.
