Bling Squared
Salt Spring Island glass sculptors Neacol and Stanley Miller synthesize fire, glass, colour and pop-culture to create a body of work that resides somewhere between toys and art.
In 2007, these Vancouver film industry veterans retreated to their tiny Pacific island to create playful, anime-inspired artworks referencing comic books, cartoons, and candy.
Under the studio name Bling Squared, their pieces, usually between 1 and 10 centimeters in diameter, are artifacts of whimsy that will last for centuries.
Influenced by the Japanese phenomenon of collectible vinyl desk toys, the couple's response is the permanence and vibrancy of glass as both material and statement.
Collectors and supporters of the work respond with instant happiness evoked by these charming pieces. A number of the characters in the line are inspired and suggested by the fans themselves, such as the signature "Ninja Octopus". In the context of "Low Brow" pop art, the figurines are timely, joyous, accessible, and irresistibly tactile.
